Yucca Mountain ventilation studies support and associated code enhancements

چکیده
This paper presents the results of the application of CFD to ventilation calculations at Yucca Mountainusing MULTIFLUX. Seven cases were selected to study the effect of the heat transport coefficient onthe drift wall temperature distribution. It was concluded that variable heat transport coefficients suchas those given by the differential–parameter CFD used in MULTIFLUX are considered the mostappropriate approach of all cases presented. This CFD model agrees well with FLUENT results andproduces the lowest temperature results, which is favorable to ventilation performance.

Modeling thermal-hydrological response of the unsaturated zone at Yucca Mountain, Nevada, to thermal load at a potential repository.
This paper presents a numerical study on the response of the unsaturated zone (UZ) system of Yucca Mountain to heat generated from decaying radioactive wastes emplaced at the proposed repository. The modeling study is based on the current thermal-hydrological (TH) mountain-scale model, which uses a locally refined 2D north-south cross-section and dual-permeability numerical approach. The model ...

In support of Pacific Northwest Laboratory's (PNL) preliminary total system performance assessment of the proposed high-level nuclear-waste repository at Yucca Mountain, transport of carbon-14 (Cl4) in the unsaturated zone was numerically modeled with the Multiphase Subsurface Transport Simulator (MSTS). Total system performance assessments are being conducted to estimate potential cumulative r...
متن کاملEstimation of percolation flux from borehole temperature data at Yucca Mountain, Nevada.
Temperature data from the unsaturated zone (UZ) at Yucca Mountain are analyzed to estimate percolation-flux rates and overall heat flux. A multilayer, one-dimensional analytical solution is presented for determining percolation flux from temperature data. Case studies have shown that the analytical solution agrees very well with results from the numerical code, TOUGH2. The results of the analys...

Soil-geomorphic studies indicate that six major allostratigraphic units occur in Crater Flat, Nevada, adjacent to Yucca Mountain. These units are, from youngest to oldest, Crater Flat, Little Cones, Late Black Cone, Early Black Cone, Yucca, and Solitario. Presence and degree of differentiation of Av, Ak, Bw, Bt, Btk, Btkq, and Bqkm genetic soil horizons characterize units, confirm relative ages...
